Charles Perrault is hardly a household name, yet his "Old Time Tales" (1697) have had a profound influence on both high art and pop culture. He established the fairy tale as a literary genre, paving the way for the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. This is a good collection of entertaining fairy tales by an old master (though the rhyming morals at the end of each tale made me roll my eyes). The version worked perfectly on my phone--no skipped pages, no problems seeing the text.
I have a large collection of children's books, including a number of collectible volumes of classic stories illustrated by the greatest artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To find a little collection like this that includes illustrations by Gustave Doré is truly a treasure. It's also fascinating to see familiar stories close to their original form, without the prudish edits they've collected over the years. Whether you're a fan of the artist and the writer or want a great storybook for your children, enjoy!
II have loved Perrault's stories since I was about four. They have an 'everlasting' quality. There are stories in this book I haven't read before. For many years I have enjoyed Gustave Dore's work and admired his faithful black and whites. His drawings always seem to carry a strong atmosphere in them. I bought the book because I couldn't wait to see how he would have done the illustrations. They are wonderful and bring the enchancted feeling of the text with them.
Excellent telling of classic fairy tales. A must read for any fairytale lover. I quite enjoyed this book!
I love the fact that I have heard and seen adaptations of so many of these stories and I had no idea who the author was or that he had written so many tales. It has been interesting reading the translated originals as an adult. I am glad that I stumbled across this collection as a result of a Google doodle a few weeks ago.
If you ever wondered where Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty came from, they came from this remarkable 17th century Frenchman. The stories themselves are fascinating, as they all have morals appended that are, of course, very tied to the cultural mores of the time. And no, they aren't exactly like the Disney versions! Harry Clarke is considered Ireland's greatest illustrator, and the reproductions of his color and black & white work in this book will show you why. The intricacy of the illustrations is just astonishing, and I am happy to say that this book shows them very well - sharp, deep, and with good color fidelity. It's true that some of the females are bare chested and Sleeping Beauty is covered only by a veil, but I find this no more suggestive than, say, Venus di Milo. It's great art, and very much in keeping with the time the tales were written - check out the sky high hair on the noblewomen! All told, a fascinating soiree into the origins of some of our most familiar fairy tales.
This collections holds about 8 or 10 classic fairy tales, some we know well some not so much. Many we have seen reappear from other authors such as the Brothers Grimm and made into movies by the likes of Disney, but Disney changed quite a bit from these tales. I liked being able to read the original versions of the stories and see how they became different throughout time from 1697 to now 2018 there are a lot of differences for example, Little Red Riding Hood does not get rescued, but devoured by the wolf. Each of the stories have some sort of gore to them, not intended to really scare the children, but for the ew factor, though I do admit some stories I wondered how they were considered children stories.
Some of the stories I have read before in Brother's Grimm, other stories like Puss In Boots, I have not read before and enjoyed finally getting the chance to read them in their original format. Children do enjoy stories with ogres and things and in the years that follow the publication of this book, children are protected more from things people think might be too scary like an ogre eating children, not to mention to tell the morals and convey the themes involved some of the stories needed to have a little gore and what some would consider adult themes.
While the author included morals of the story, they do seem to be morals that HE thought the story told and have room for each reader to form their own opinions of what the fairy tales are supposed to convey. Some people may say classic fairy tales are no longer relevant especially with the movies and adaptations we've seen throughout the years, but I believe they are still relevant and convey the same if not different morals to an audience in today's society no matter how different things may be.
I recommend everyone read this collection, it may open your eyes to some beloved stories you thought you knew or rekindle a love for a story you loved as a child. Pick up a copy from .
